Green Community of the Year competition: Promoting sustainable development and environmental protection in the Czech Republic

Untitled Design 15

Every year, Czech municipalities come up with new ideas in the environmental field, whether it is energy savings, self-sufficiency or innovative environmentally friendly technologies. ČSOB has long supported such initiatives, and therefore this year, in cooperation with the Economia media house, it is announcing the Green Municipality of the Year competition. This programme represents a unique opportunity for towns and villages that are not indifferent to the environment and sustainable operation. The winning municipality will receive the Green Municipality of the Year award and a sum of money for further development.

Objectives of the competition

  • To select and reward inspiring municipalities committed to environmental and social issues
  • To inspire other municipalities to implement their own solutions by sharing best practices
  • To encourage the creation of new environmentally friendly projects in the municipal sector
  • Demonstrate funding and sourcing opportunities for sustainable projects

Who will decide the winner?

The expert jury consists of representatives from companies, municipalities, the Ministry of the Environment, architects and experts. One of the members is Karel Kotoun, founder of Green0meter. The jury's task will be to assess existing projects or projects that are currently being implemented. They will be looking at the cost-effectiveness of the project, citizen involvement, vision and much more.

Dates to write down

The application process will be open from 15.1.2024 and will close on 17.3.2024. Between 8.4 and 30.4.2024 the questionnaires will be evaluated and the jury will meet to decide the winners. The award ceremony will take place on 13.6.2024 at the CSOB Campus.

Competition categories and evaluation

The "Green Municipality of the Year" award is given in two categories, namely:

  • Municipalities over 1,000 inhabitants
  • Municipalities under 1,000 inhabitants.

In each category, the 3 best achievements are awarded.

A jury of experts will select the 12 most inspiring project entries from the municipalities. Each member of the jury will then evaluate and score (from 1 to 12) the entries. The scores of the jury members will be added together and the municipalities with the most points will take the first, second and third positions.

An additional award is the "Social Achievement of the Year", which goes to a municipality, regardless of population, for initiatives that promote community belonging.

How to register?

Registration is free and municipalities can apply from January 15 to March 17, 2024 at www.zelenaobecroku.cz, where a registration form is available. The form is prepared in cooperation with Green0meter and can also be found at this link
